Our background

ATHINA DILAVERI, OUR FOUNDER

Mrs Athina Dilaveri was born in Piraeus in 1908 and died in 1970. She was the third child of the entrepreneur Vassilis Konstantopoulos and the younger sister of known Greek actress, Katina Paxinou. She married Kriton Dilaveris, a ceramic entrepreneur, with whom she had no children. She was particularly sensitive towards child protection issues and always participated in social service committes and charities. She was the Chairman of the Home for Children and Adolescents of Piraeus for 18 years (1952-1970) and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Hatzikyriakio Foundation while also serving at the Municipal Authorities of Piraeus. For her lifetime work and contribution, she was awarded the Golden Cross of Honor, the Golden Medal of Police Merit by the Greek State.

THE EARLY YEARS

The Home for Children and Adolescents of Piraeus was officially founded by Athina Dilaveri in 1955. However, the preparations have already started in 1950. By 1964, a total of 7562 cases of minors had been undertaken. The year 1957 marked a new path for the Home for Children and Adolescents of Piraeus, since on 24 May in the presence of Queen Frederiki, the Minister of Justice and many citizens of Piraeus, the opening ceremony of the Home was held, where the children whose custody was assigned to the service would be accommodated. The Home for Children and Adolescents operated under the name “The Good Shepherd” at the Queen’s request. In 1965, the “Good Shepherd” was moved to the Kaminia area, on Mavrogenous Street, where it remains to this day.

We carry on with passion in our hearts to this day

In 2013, Mrs Argyro Bletsa-Arnautis, judge in Piraeus courts, was appointed Chairman of the Board, and during her term the Home for Children and Adolescents of Piraeus entered a new era. In particular, the provision of material, social and psychological support to the children and adolescents reached a stable basis, while clothing and footwear were also provided; the accommodation premises were regularly inspected and cooperation with public hospitals was ensured for the provision of appropriate medical care to children. At the same time, care was taken to boost the children’s education by providing additional teaching hours, attending educational seminars and other activities. Collaboration began with many volunteer teachers who supported the children with learning, while school performance of the minors was regularly monitored. Training seminars were also held for the home’s staff and since 2015, scientific conferences on various topics have been organized on an annual basis. Among the most important projects of that period were activities related to the entertainment of the children outside the premises of the home, such as one-day or multi-day excursions, attending theatre plays and visiting cultural places.
At the same time, the great project of refurbishing the home’s facilities begins aiming at optimal living conditions for minor guests and the best possible interior layout, in order to change the past institutional form.
